Popular Science Magazine Awards Volvo Cars for Innovative Child Booster Cushion System

Irvine, CA. November 2007. Volvo Cars new booster seat helps protect children who have outgrown their toddler seat. In combination with an extended Inflatable Curtain and new, stronger side body structure, and load limiting seat belts this world's first two-step integrated booster cushion recently received international acknowledgement as a unique engineering solution to give children a safe and comfortable travel experience.

Chosen from thousands of new products and innovations, and selected as 1 of 100 best new technologies for 2007, Volvo Car Corporation, LLC, received Popular Science's annual Best of What's New award for this child protection system. This design was first shown in 2001 aboard Volvo's Safety Concept Car as a concept that would provide better seat belt positioning for children. Subsequent refinements to the seat, vehicle side body structure, seat belt attributes, and inflatable side curtain culminated with launching Volvo's newest crossover wagon, XC70 in Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland this past March.

Earlier this year, Volvo Cars received an award from the World Traffic Safety Symposium at this year's New York International Auto Show. The award was for best new safety feature in an automobile.

Volvo's prides itself in finding innovative ways to advance automobile safety. "Our goal is to help protect occupants. This award acknowledges our efforts to help protect our smallest passengers, our children," commented Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor, Volvo Car Corporation, Sweden. "This new seat, in conjunction with our refinements in side body structure and the inflatable curtain will have a significant reduction in child injuries."

Safety Potential Prediction
Seat belt positioning for children of different heights is important for better placement and protection. Several studies have shown that proper positioning with the use of a booster cushion helps reduce abdominal injuries caused by the child slipping under the seat belt. Field data in several studies supports these findings and emphasizes the importance of booster seats, and that the booster be designed to hold the belt firmly across the pelvis or thighs during a frontal impact. The overall effectiveness (Measured Abbreviated Injury Scale 2+) of booster seats is estimated as 31 percent as compared to using only a seat belt and as high as 75 percent as compared to no restraint at all. Getting all children of appropriate age and size to use booster cushion offers a potentially significant safety benefit.

Booster Cushion Usage
For children using a booster cushion different types of misuse varies depending on which study is analyzed, but the share is significant. According to a study carried out by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA, 2004), 39.5 percent of the 664 children inspected in belt-positioning booster cushion were considered as critical misuse. The most common occurring misuse was improper fitment of the shoulder belt followed by loose belt, improper fit of the lap belt and inappropriate age/fit. In Germany, the misuse rate was reported to be 46.8 percent. A Spanish study identified that nearly 50 percent of the children aged 6 to 12 restrained with a child restraint had some type of misuse, the most common being the seat belt placed behind the child.

Children's Attitudes Toward Booster Cushion
A questionnaire-based study1 on 4 to 11 year old Australian children reported that one of the reasons for moving the child from a booster to the adult seat belt only (69 percent) was primarily that the child was too big for the booster. Another major reason was the child disliked sitting in a booster and would be more comfortable using only the seat belt and, not surprisingly, the child thought they were too 'grown-up' for a booster cushion. The study concluded that the design of booster cushions should have the capacity to seat larger children as well as being more appealing to children. By offering the integrated two-stage booster cushions, Volvo believes the level of acceptance will increase among this age group.

Combined Safety System
"We took into account the child's physical size and weight, seat belt misuse, child physiology, along with redesigning our vehicle side body structure and side impact inflatable curtain to come up with this new integrated two-step booster seat," noted Broberg. "There will be better fitment of our three-point seat belt, a wider age and weight range, and better attitude for the child who can now easily see outside with the added benefit of reducing driver distraction. Hopefully we will hear less often: 'Are we there yet?'"

Vehicle Option
This new child safety feature will be available this fall in the all-new 2008 XC70 crossover wagon, followed in February 2008 in the all-new 2008 V70. Priced at $495 (manufacture's suggested retail price) this option includes two rear-seat mounted integrated booster seats and two pyrotechnically pretensioned seat belts with new load limiters to accommodate children using this booster cushion and normally positioned adults. Both seats fold flat to expand the cargo compartment and are indistinguishable from rear seats without this option.

Specifications
The upper setting is designed for children measuring 37-47 in. and weighing between 33 and 55 lbs., while the lower setting is intended for children between 45 and 55 in. height and weighing between 48 and 80 lbs.

IIHSA Acknowledges Three Volvo Models as "Top Safety Picks"

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Acknowledges Three Volvo Models As "Top Safety Picks"

(IRVINE, Calif.) For the past two years, Volvo's XC90 SUV, C70 Convertible, and S80 Sedan have all earned IIHS's top honors for vehicle safety in front, side, and rear impact crash protection. Each model presented unique challenges towards achieving top ratings.

"Volvo safety has been over 80 years in the making. Our cars are born from a culture that believes in protecting those in and around everything we make," states Anne Belec, President and CEO, Volvo Cars of North America. "Safety is a matter of cultural pride. Safety is not added on; it comes with the first kernel of thought when designing a new Volvo." Belec continues, "With today's engineering infrastructure, many can build cars to pass tests as witnessed by 34 vehicles being acknowledged as Top Safety Picks while last year there were only 11. What separates Volvo from others is factoring in real world accident research to build, what we believe is the safest SUV, Convertible, and Sedan, real world cars that go beyond standardized tests."

Volvo's For Real World Safety
Volvo's holistic, 'Circle of Development' approach to safety starts from real world accident research, moving through to engineering, testing, manufacturing and coming back to real world accident research. Volvo safety is about Protective and Preventive safety - to help people during one of their worst life experiences: an automobile accident.

While each vehicle achieved top safety acknowledgements for IIHS's standard bevy of crash testing, Volvo went even further to help offer protection that might be needed in real world situations. Acing crash test criteria is but one way to protect occupants. At Volvo, there is the belief that standard tests help to predict vehicle behavior but real world accident research adds another layer of safety engineering to those in and around Volvo cars.

XC90

When launched in 2002, the XC90 was fitted with the world's first Roll Over Protection System (ROPS) that helped driver maintain vehicle control during rapid lane changes associated with accident avoidance maneuvers. However, not all accidents are created equally. Volvo has used different grades of steel including Ultra High Strength Steel in order to enhance the structural integrity of the vehicle.

C70

The all new C70 carries safety engineering from the preceding C70 by increasing use of Ultra High Strength Steel for side and rear energy absorption protection. Also featured is the world's first side impact air bag from convertibles. Also standard are pop-up roll bars.

S80 Protective Exterior Safety
Protective safety in the new Volvo S80 is structured in the form of a network of exterior and interior safety systems that interact to reduce the risk of occupant injury in the event of a collision. The exterior systems have the task of distributing and absorbing incoming collision forces so that the passenger space is preserved as intact as possible. The body is therefore built in the form of a box-section structure using varying grades of steel, with all the components interacting to provide controlled deformation that reduces impacting energy to the human body.

Transverse Mounted Engines
Like the rest of Volvo's offerings, the S80 features a transversely installed engine and front-wheel drive. Transverse engine installation provides a controlled deformation zone in the engine compartment and helps reduce the risk of engine intrusion into the passenger compartment in a frontal collision. Even the new V8 is transversely installed thanks to its extremely compact dimensions and effective packaging.

Interior Safety
Interior safety systems assist in keeping the passengers securely in place to help maximize seat belt/airbag effectiveness and minimize the risk of serious injuries. In order to provide the most effective protection possible Volvo Cars has developed a number of unique systems.
A new type of side-impact airbag makes Volvo's patented SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) even more effective. The new side impact airbags feature two separate inflation chambers - one at hip height and one at chest height. Since the hips can withstand greater impact than the chest, the lower chamber is inflated at five time's higher pressure than the upper section. The side impact airbags interact with the inflatable curtains (IC) and the body's network of beams to reduce acceleration loads on the human body.
Volvo's WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System) - is one of the most effective on the market. In the event of a severe impact from the rear, the front seat backrest and head restraint move together with the occupant's body, thus damping its movement in much the same way the arms move rearward when catching a ball. In the latest generation of WHIPS, the system's function has been further developed to provide an even smoother "catching" motion.
A three-piece steering column designed to pivot up and collapse away from the driver through the use of a pyrotechnically charged separation bolt. This helps to better position the air bag deployment process for pending contact with the driver.
All five seats are equipped with three-point inertia-reel safety belts, belt pre-tensioners and head restraints. The highest possible safety requires that all occupants always use their safety belts (which Volvo made standard equipment in 1959 - a world's first).

Preventive safety - the avoidance of accidents - was one of the most important starting points when the new S80 was being developed. Preventative safety has lead to an entirely new generation of advanced driving and support systems and, of course, included Volvo's legendary Protective safety.

Accident avoidance is the next step in Preventive protection. Combining multiplexed electronics with advanced software and hardware designs have created a new level of driver assisted technologies. Preventive safety systems transform surrounding environmental activities into usable data to help the S80 driver avoid dangerous situations.

Collision Avoidance Package - New for 2008 S80, V70 and XC70 ($1695 MSRP) *
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) uses a radar sensor to help the driver maintain the distance to the vehicle in front. ACC should primarily be seen as a comfort-enhancing function, but it contributes at the same time to more controlled driving when the traffic rhythm is uneven.

Collision Warning with Auto Brake Function (CW) helps reduce the risk of frontal impact. If the Volvo approaches another vehicle from behind and the driver does not react, the system alerts the driver with audible and visual signals. If the risk of a collision nonetheless continues to increase despite the warning, the brake support system is activated. Thereafter, if the system senses that a collision is likely to occur, then the brakes are applied up to 50%.

Distance Alert helps keep the time gap to the vehicle in front, also functions when the ACC is disengaged. If the gap becomes shorter than selected, a heads-up display is illuminated to warn driver.

Driver Alert this unique system uses a camera to monitor the cars movements between the lane markings. The system calculates whether you risk losing control of the vehicle. An audible and test message warning are used if the risk is assessed as "high".

Lane Departure Warning is activated if the car should cross one of the road markings without an obvious reason. This system helps to prevent road departure accidents and head-on collisions due to temporary distractions.
Blind Spot Identification System (BLIS) registers if another vehicle is in the offset rear blind spot along either side of the car and the driver is alerted via a visual signal.

Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS) helps stop the driver being distracted by non-essential information in pressing situations, for instance by delaying incoming phone calls or SMS.

Active Bi-Xenon Light - moving headlight beams that follow the curvature of the road - help maintain the best possible visibility in the dark on twisting roads.

Personal Car Communicator (PCC) is an advanced control center in pocket format. At the touch of a button, the car owner can instantly find out whether ...... the car is locked or unlocked ...... the alarm has been activated ...... the alarm has been set off and someone is inside the car.
The information is stored so that it is possible to check if the car really was locked when it was parked, at any time and from anywhere.

* For S80, V70 and XC70 production from mid-November 2008 - on

Volvo Cars Introduces New Systems for Alerting Tired and Distracted Drivers

  • Driver Alert Control - unique technology that alerts tired and distracted drivers

  • Lane Departure Warning - alerts the driver if the car crosses one of the road markings without an obvious reason
Studies show that up to 90 percent of all traffic accidents are caused by driver distraction.
Now Volvo Cars introduces Driver Alert Control - with a technology solution that is a world-first in passenger cars. The system aims to alert the driver when his or her concentration level is affected, for instance during long journeys.

Another new system, Lane Departure Warning, alerts the driver if the car crosses one of the road markings without an obvious reason.

Lane Departure Warning and Driver Alert Control will be part of the same option package, called Driver Alert System. It will be available in the Volvo S80, V70 and XC70 at the end of 2007.

"Real life safety is the key to our safety philosophy. When it comes to preventive safety, we have the same approach as when we develop protective systems. In other words that our research and technical development focus on areas where new technology can create significant results in real-life-traffic," says Ingrid Skogsmo, Director of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre.

Based on the accident statistics above, Volvo Cars is focusing on developing efficient technology to help drivers avoid or reduce the severity of accidents caused by distraction and driver fatigue.

Congrats to our Team Mate - Jimmie Johnson

Superior Volvo would like to congratulate Jimmie Johnson, Chad Knaus and Mr. Hendrick for Back to Back Championships. Way to go TeamMates!!
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Nov. 18, 2007) – Future generations of NASCAR historians and fans will marvel at the meteoric rise of Jimmie Johnson's career, which reached another level of excellence Sunday night when he clinched his second consecutive NASCAR NEXTEL Cup championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
The driver, who debuted at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Oct. 7, 2001, took just 219 races to enshrine himself with names like Petty, Earnhardt, Gordon, Allison and others among NASCAR royalty.
"I cannot put into words what I am feeling right now," said Johnson, who finished seventh in Sunday's race enabling him to nip teammate Jeff Gordon, who finished fourth, by 77 points in the 2007 "Chase for the NEXTEL Cup."
Sunday's race concluded a spectacular 2007 season that saw Johnson and his Hendrick Motorsports team post 10 victories, moving his career total to 33 and into a tie with Fireball Roberts for the 18th-most wins.
"This trophy represents so much hard work by so many people and is the culmination of so many dreams of mine and others that's its almost impossible to talk about," said Johnson.
"There are so many people to thank. Rick Hendrick, Lowe's, my teammates -- the list is endless, but I am very appreciative of all that people have done for me in this sport and in life."
On Sunday, Johnson started from the pole, led the first lap and never ventured outside the top 10. Afterward, he admitted he was points racing to preserve his 89-point lead, but he doubted he could have ever caught event winner Matt Kenseth.
After the race, Johnson speculated he could have finished in the top three, but common sense took over late in the race.
"So the racer in me, I was trying to pass [Martin Truex] on the last lap, and then I'm like, 'What are you trying to do?' Just stop. It's tough to not go. But it was a balance of putting up a strong performance tonight and finishing the season up right."
The seventh-place finish might have ended Johnson's streak of four consecutive victories, but it was good enough to secure a place in NASCAR history.
"I love that we are going to be in record books," Johnson said. "I think our team, and Chad and I, we like to go out and let our stats speak for ourselves. That's been my style and the way we've done things all along.
"We'll leave the opinions to everyone else, and hope that our record speaks for itself. We'll work hard, and do everything we can to win races and championships."
Nobody expected Johnson and his Hendrick Motorsports team to equal last season's title that included five victories, highlighted by wins at the Daytona 500, Talladega and the Brickyard 400. But 2007 turned out to be even better. His 10 victories topped the most of any driver and his surge in the final third of the season included victories in six of the last 12 races.
In the Chase, Johnson posted an average finish of 5.0 while Gordon's was 5.1.
"It's absolutely phenomenal," said crew chief Chad Knaus. "I'm very proud and very pleased of what we were able to accomplish. And the 24 and 48 shop this year, it's amazing what can happen when you have a group of 92 guys that are going out there and not so much racing against once another, but racing against the competition. That is really what this team did this year."
Car owner Rick Hendrick knew one of his drivers would win the title and the other would finish second. But both deserved credit for the overall performance of the team.
"It's unbelievable," he said. "You dream about winning one of those, and doing it back-to-back, it's really special.
"To have the two cars run like this all year it's great. I think the most gratifying thing to me was during the race and after the race the way [Gordon's team] handled it.
"I told [both teams] before the race that I was going to the guy that finished second first, and I did. And everybody just, they're happy for each other, and it's been a great night."
With two trophies sitting in his trophy case, the question now is will Johnson duplicate Cale Yarborough's feat when he won three consecutive titles in 1976-78?
Johnson isn't ready to rule it out.
"The good thing, I feel, is we're just really hitting our stride," he said. "I think we have a lot of good years ahead of us, and we'll be fighting for more championships and certainly winning more races as years go by. Hopefully, we can be a three-time champion in the near future."
His car owner agreed.
"I just don't see anything that is going to slow Jimmie down," Hendrick said. "He just gets better every time I see him get in the car."
But for now, there's a second championship to celebrate and a fulfilled dream to enjoy.
"Since I was a kid, I just wanted to race," Johnson said. "I wanted to be the best at racing. I didn't know where it would lead me or what was in store for me or where it would go, but I loved to race.
"And to be here racing on the main stage of NASCAR, and to have the success of the championships means the world to me. It is something I'm very, very proud of, and thankful of as well. And thankful for the relationships and friendships that I have.
"I look forward to the future; a lot of good times ahead of us."
